Business Intelligence

The world of BI. Getting a grip on data, going from data to insights and staying future-proof with your team. It's our daily work. But why did we ever fall in love with this field? Why does the relationship continue? How do we look to the future? And how in love are you really?

Where the (pre)love of data originated

Are we looking through rose-colored glasses? No, within BI we look ahead through the rearview mirror. That's our motto. With Business Intelligence, we unlock and translate data into relevant insights and predictability. Colleague Stephanie Teunisse finds BI the perfect combination of creativity and numbers. She joined us as a Business Intelligence Consultant after her Microsoft Azure Data & AI Track at the Techionista Academy. Stephanie: ''My 'relationship' with BI is currently still in the 'honeymoon period,' so I'm currently still seeing everything through those rose-colored glasses/back-view mirror. I am in my element when I can bring structure to apparent chaos (my friends also call me smurf because of my blue nature). I'm creative and pragmatic when it comes to coming up with solutions and I think that's where the love of data was born''.

Xander Kuiper? Our CTO first encountered Microsoft SQL Server and the Report module in MS Access on an initial data visualization assignment right after graduation in 2002. We are looking for the story behind the data. Stephan wanted to do "something with IT" after his education and that dream came true.

Alla, also started with us from the Techionista Academy, says there was no other option for her than falling in love with data. Why, ''There are so many challenges and brain stimuli that I have to solve that puzzle every time from myself.''

Why we are still in love with BI

Xander: ''Based on data, I help organizations transform it into information, knowledge and insights. Call it steering information. The most important thing is that organizations can make sound choices about their operations. Why am I still in love with the world of BI? It has long since ceased to be about numbers alone. It's the wonderful world where Data Engineering and Data Analysis come together. Where we work with Power BI, finance and marketing tools, have to be GDPR compliant, we go from a Data Warehouse to a Data Lake and where, just like we are used to from the cloud world, we try to automate everything as much as possible. A challenging field that colleagues within TeamValue will remain in love with for a long time to come. Tip from Xander: Guy in a Cube (Power BI Training and More).

Why Stephan is still in love with BI? ''Because data is simply fantastic, it can tell you anything but you have to make it available in a good way. The data is always there, the form and technology around it is constantly changing. This puzzle is fun to make and you are always facing a new challenge''.

When we ask Dorien why she is in love with BI? ''Buttons. At home, I was the one who installed and tuned radios and televisions. In a more recent past, I took projects like standardizing the metadata of books for granted. Without good descriptive data about books, no findability of a book in the online bookstore. And a Saturday without sudoku from the Volkskrant is a day not lived''.

There are still so many sources we can tap into to enrich data. At the same time, we need to be even more careful in using data, especially consumer data. By flattening all customer journeys with data, you may be taking away human judgment. Do you have to want that? Nice questions to keep us busy! Tips from Dorien? ''I follow the trade association for data-driven marketing (DDMA) about, for example, the consequences of first-party cookies. I also now read (or listen to) the books 'Socrates on sneakers' (Elke Wis), 'Data power and counterpower' (Kathelijne Buitenweg) and the podcast 'Dataloog' sometimes has interesting data use cases''.
