Stephanie and Dorien, both BI Consultant, alumni of the Techionista Academy, started a new adventure at the beginning of this year. They made a career switch from the marketing and cultural sector to IT. Exciting? Yes, definitely. Well prepared? You could say so! How are they doing now, their experiences and the first steps towards becoming a Business Intelligence Expert? They take you through their first months at TeamValue.

Many questions, challenges and opportunities as a Techionista

Stephanie: ''A switch from the cultural sector, but certainly no culture shock. We sometimes heard about the big bad IT world and hard consultancy, but I don't feel that way at all. We want to deliver value, we really work together and we help each other where necessary. That results orientation is just fine''. She adds: ''I also worked with Power BI before, but compared to what I know and can do now, that was peanuts. We tell a story with data and I think that is the coolest thing of all! That background in content marketing still comes in handy''.

Dorien says she has always been friends with IT. In her previous jobs, she already had a lot to do with processes and technology. She says: ''That flame has always stayed lit, until I decided to actually make the switch! I was always looking for substantiation of the data. After studying SQL, DAX and Data Factory, among other things, it was clear to me that I was ready for this new adventure''.

We like the combination of hard and soft skills at the Techionista Academy and that is exactly what we are looking for in new colleagues who come to reinforce TeamValue. Want to know more about the collaboration? Read more about it here.

How to become a Business Intelligence Expert

Expert, expert... Both ladies think that is still a big word. That is also something that has to grow," says Dorien. We've all had the 'throw that laptop out the window' moment, but it was short-lived. You especially wanted to solve that puzzle! Especially the Agile way of working based on BizDevOps appeals to her and that is one of the reasons why she chose TeamValue. The culture, the non-hierarchical and content-rich proposition really appeals to me'', says Dorien.

For Stephanie, Data Engineering was the closest thing to her. It's more abstract, but once set up properly you get so much more out of data and its connections. ''I couldn't wait for the speed dates that were already scheduled. I couldn't hide my enthusiasm after seeing the videos on the website. I got through Xander's famous application question and then everything went pretty quickly. After a couple of nice conversations, critical questions from both sides and a lot of positive energy, I could say: "I am a Teammember". If you are now curious about that famous application question, apply for it, I would say😉 You can do that via jobs @TeamValue.

With the Microsoft certificates Azure Fundamentals, Data Analytics and Azure Data Engineer Associate in his pocket, there is a solid basis for the growth to Business Intelligence Expert. What else is part of the success formula according to our Techionistas? A good onboarding and a strong team!

The first months at TeamValue and the first assignment in the field

Stephanie had already heard a lot at the office from TeamValue colleagues about our client Air Miles and the great things we are doing there. So it was nice for her to hear that she could also start there herself. She is working on a plan for the dashboards of the data team, so that they can optimise data insight for themselves and other departments. At the PO Council, Dorien is involved in converting existing dashboards to a new environment. Both are taking the steps towards becoming BI specialists within their first assignment and are looking forward to working with colleagues on Data Engineering solutions and applying all our architecture principles.

One thing is certain. The ladies are going to fly, keep learning and are curious about how they will view themselves as data professionals in six months' time. In any case, the IT world is at their feet.
