The Role of Business Intelligence Consultant - In conversation with Ilse
The importance of details
As a Business Intelligence Consultant I am currently working on a client assignment where I can use all my technical knowledge to help the team at the client improve their data platform and be able to deliver to their stakeholders what they really need. Together with the team, we are working on the way-of-work (The Golden Path) and its implementation, so that later, when we are gone again, they can apply it themselves.
I gained most of the technical knowledge from my assignment before this. In this I worked on our own product: the Data Hub and associated management reports. I spent a lot of time unlocking and visualizing data needed for data-driven decision making. In this I was given a super wide range of tasks and responsibilities. Actually, I was busy with all the things that occur during the project. In which I gained a lot of value from analytical thinking and paying close attention to details. This is very important within solving data issues.
With each assignment, we kick off the day with a daily. This is where we discuss all the relevant issues for the day. I also talk to my colleagues within the TeamValue data team on a daily basis. We share a lot with each other. On a professional level, but sometimes also privately. That makes for a nice and familiar working environment.
I notice over the past two years I have really grown within my role as a consultant because of the knowledge sharing of my colleagues. For example, last year my senior colleagues taught a course focused on SQL Fundamentals. This year, Data Modeling and Data Storytelling are on the program.
No more reinventing the wheel every time
In the previous project, I was very happy when we set up an official logical data model. This allowed us to generate the data marts. This means that we have a "single point of fact" from which all reports originate. This means we don't have to reinvent the wheel each time, which saves and will save us an enormous amount of time.
We achieved this success in part by applying "Doing the right things. Speed was a major requirement within this project. However, because in the past the main focus was on quick solutions, the solutions created were not sustainable. Our team focused on doing the right things within a short time frame. This meant that we went back to basics, so that we now have a foundation that we can use to build datamarts for reports in a reliable and sustainable way.
Family Feeling
TeamValue feels like a close-knit home base, a family of sorts. Now we also call ourselves "Ohana" (meaning family). But that's really how it feels. I have very nice colleagues, who have a lot of knowledge as well as a lot of sociability. This ensures that I can challenge myself and go that extra mile.
